On Friday 13 September 2019, Joe’s Bakery celebrated its 40th birthday.
Joe Buhagiar first started his bakery as “The Cake Kitchen” in 1979 on Outram Street in West Perth, near where Mayfair Lane is now.
The little shop ran from here for 7 years, before moving to 1248 Hay Street where it still is today. The shop soon became to be known as “Joe’s”, and then was renamed Joe’s Cake Kitchen. For a number of years Joe’s Cake Kitchen ran side by side next to another bakery, West End Bakery. The two stores use to take turns closing over the Christmas and New Year break and had a friendly existence running next to each other, with each store offering their specialties.
When West End Cakes decided to close, Joe’s decided to expand their shop and took over 1246 Hay Street as well. In January 2016, Joe’s Cake Kitchen reopened with a fresh new look, extra seating and is now known as Joe’s Bakery West Perth.
While the bakery has gone through a few name changes and makeovers, the bakery has stuck true to its values of providing good quality, delicious, fresh and affordable baked goods.
Joe’s is a small family run business, with Joe’s wife Jane, daughter Gabby and son David all working together. David started his pastry apprenticeship with his Dad in 2003 and Jane and Gabby do the bookwork and help in the kitchen and serving.
David and Gabby have fond memories of their Dad coming home and smelling like cakes and spending time in the bakery growing up. Joe now has three granddaughters who love to come in and enjoy a babycino and watch Joe and David baking.
Joe and his family would like to thank all of their customers for their support, regular patronage and friendship over the past 40 years. And also a thank you to the hundreds of staff that they have employed over that time!
